WGCI/Chicago is a legendary Urban Mainstream station, and so any personnel moves attract attention. The Chicago Morning Takeover featuring Kyle Santillian, Kendra G and Leon Rogers launched four months ago, replacing The Morning Riot host Tony Sculfield and co-host Nina Chantele.
On May 18th, The Talent Report noticed that midday personality Loni Swain and afternoon drive host UB Rodriguez were inexplicably removed from WGCI.com, which totally gives the impression that both are no longer with the station.
With such a new morning show still in the gelling phase, why replace two dayparts? Is this the first step in a format change, or just a reset for Chicago’s heritage station WGCI?
We’ll be watching and listening, so check back for details as we learn more.
UPDATE: May 20th, 2015 10:03 pm
Loni Swain and UB Rodriguez have indeed exited WGCI, and their replacements are definitely not names that were expected. Instead of doing a nationwide search, both of the new additions to WGCI come from direct competitor WPWX (Power 92). Frankie Robinson and Tone Kapone will move to middays and afternoons respectively, the same dayparts they handled on Power 92.
The start date for Frankie and Tone has not been announced, but their former positions on Power 92 are open.
