The WNYC / Gothamist newsroom is looking for a creative and curious reporter to join our Culture & Arts desk, producing for both our digital and broadcast audiences.
A successful candidate has experience covering unique angles and emerging trends around food, music, performing arts and the New York City zeitgeist. This reporter has a proven track record of producing daily coverage as well as enterprise features.
This reporting is essential to covering a region that creates and fosters world-class and groundbreaking culture and entertainment. We are seeking candidates who are infinitely curious and serious about their work, but don’t take themselves or their subjects too seriously. This role requires an open mind and a reporter who is willing to experiment with formats, voice and angles. This beat isn’t only about covering new exhibits or events, but telling us something we didn’t know – or hadn’t considered – about how NYC residents experience the city’s art and culture. That may mean dissecting a NYC meme, explaining the career of Mr. Met, or exploring the successes of a unique chef.
The ideal candidate has strong sources and the ability to capture both mainstream and underground stories, including emerging talent, exciting programming and creative communities. This reporter should bring an inclusive lens to our coverage by capturing the impact that culture – and access to culture – has on all people who live in our region.
This reporter reports to WNYC’s Culture & Arts Editor.

- Conceive, source and pitch original stories and series that will engage listeners and readers, answering pressing questions and giving daily utility that drives audience habits
- Consistently meet publishing deadlines for both daily and enterprise work
- Develop sources that lead to stories our audience can’t get elsewhere
- Participate fully as a member of the Culture & Arts team by contributing to coverage plans, meetings, brainstorming sessions and newsroom projects
- Effectively coordinate with other editors and digital journalists for maximum reach across our platforms
- Enthusiastically participate in newsroom-wide efforts to improve workflows, policies, and various practices as requested

- Three years professional reporting experience at a reputable news organization required.
- Experience in culture and arts coverage and a familiarity with various communities and institutions in the New York City region is strongly preferred.

- Experience with audience-centered engagement projects strongly preferred.
- Competence in SEO and other digital audience skills.
- Experience using production systems and software tools required to edit, produce and curate content.
