Pattie Moreno has a built a very respectable resume at Top 40 and Rhythmic stations KHHM (Hot 103.5)/Sacramento, XMOR/San Diego and KBOS (B95)/Fresno, so some may have been surprised to hear about her newest position as the Program Director of WMXJ (Magic 102.7)/Miami. It’s not unusual for PDs or even On-Air Talent to switch formats, but was Pattie Moreno truly hired to lead Miami’s Classic Hits station?

On Tuesday, December 8th, WMXJ (Magic 102.7)/Miami let go several personalities including Gnarly Charlie, Tom Caminetti, Bill Murphy, Steve Young, Richie Andrews, Midday Talent Joe Johnson, Morning Show Co-Host Vance Philips and Mindy Lang, the APD/MD/Morning Show Host who has been with the station for almost 30 years. When there’s a mass layoff like this, a station rebranding or format flip usually follow. But a full week after the staff exits, the same branding and format are still in place, and so is Afternoon Talent DJ Holiday.

Entercom/Miami Market Manager Doug Abernethy led the hip-hop powerhouse KBXX (97.9 The Box)/Houston for years, and Pattie Moreno spent most of her career in Rhythmic radio. So a younger format replacing Magic 102.7 would make sense. But with three Top 40 stations and two Urban outlets already on in the market, are there enough advertising dollars in the market for another station targeting 18-34 year olds to succeed? Well, there are no Rhythmic stations, so perhaps Entercom will try to serve the unserved middle ground between Top 40 and Urban in the market. Or were the on-air departures simply a cost cutting measure?

Time will what Entercom will do with Magic 102.7, and we wish all of the Talent no longer with the station all the best.
