As the Program Director/Morning Show host when WHTZ (100.3)/New York launched, Scott Shannon is the person best qualified to tell how the station literally went from worst in the market to first place. But this documentary feels like it’s more about Shannon’s incredible career, than the overall story of Z100.

Many Z100 staffers contributed to “Worst To First,” including morning show co-hosts, station executives, and even an engineer. Record label executives gave their perspectives of Z100 back in the day, and artists like Bon Jovi, Joan Jett and Debbie Gibson underscored what a big deal it was for an artist to have their music played on the radio.

Because there were so many talented people who helped Z100’s history-making ascension, this viewer was left wanting more insight into the other Talent on the station. Mention was made of the other personalities, but learning what they did to make their marks on the station would have made this good film even better. Lastly, because Z100 has such a rich heritage, more information about the years after Scott Shannon went off the air would have been enjoyable.

“Worst To First: The True Story Of Z100 New York” will likely leave you wanting much more of the Z100 story, and that’s a good thing. Hopefully this film will inspire more legacy stations to document their history as comprehensively as Director/Writer/Producer Mitchell Stuart did for Scott Shannon and Z100.
