Talent Management

The Talent with multiple platforms, and streams of revenue, typically have at least one thing in common: Representation. A manager can undoubtedly take your career to higher levels, but one size does not fit all.

Selecting a manager is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly, and you should follow your brain and your gut before putting your career in someone else’s hands. Here’s are some things to look for in a manager.

A Believer, Not A Fan
Having a manager who truly believes in you and your Talents is essential. But don’t hire someone who is so enamored with you that they can’t give you the best direction and objectivity to help you flourish.

Iron Fist In A Velvet Glove
Organized crime boss Sam Maceo is credited with creating the phrase “iron fist in a velvet glove,” which describes the smooth but strong disposition needed by a manager. You want someone who can play well with others and cultivate relationships, while being strong enough to fight for you.

Willing To Learn
If a prospective manager believes they know everything, they probably know very little. There’s so much fluidity in the duties of a manager, that one must be open to gaining knowledge in order to help your career grow.

Unbothered By No
Some opportunities are missed simply because one didn’t ask, apply or pursue it. Don’t hire a manager who doesn’t go after opportunities because they think they’re too big for you. Find someone who is relentless and doesn’t take a “no” personally.

Experience Vs. Inexperience
Just because someone has managed a lot of clients does not mean they are the right fit for you. Sometimes new managers have the drive, passion and singular focus that can help you grow. So trust your gut, and don’t qualify or disqualify a potential manager over experience.
