You may have certain assumptions when it comes to podcasting, but several speakers featured at this year’s Podcast Movement convention in Dallas made suggestions and recommendations that challenge the status quo. Podcasting is an evolving medium, and here are some takeaways that weren’t quite expected from some of the sessions.

1. New podcasts should not focus on interviews, because it takes time to become great at interviewing. And, new podcasts have a harder time securing notable Talent for interviews, and that time can be spent elsewhere.
2. Do daily 3-5 minute podcasts instead of hour-long weekly interview-driven pods. Breaking through with once a week podcasts based on interviews is harder than ever. But short and daily content has a better chance of succeeding in the world of podcasts.
3. YouTube is the #1 place for discoverability when it comes to podcasts. Audio has always been big on YouTube, and the platform helps old content to resurface because of the algorithm.
4. You can be the expert on podcasts–guests don’t give you credibility. If you do research for your pod, you can talk about what you learned instead of relying on an interview to convey the same information.
5. Many people think video has to be perfectly polished, but some of the most popular video podcast content on YouTube is over Zoom. The content matters more than the production quality of the video.
6. Understand your audience instead of solely focus on expanding it. Focus on creating a real community.
7. The buyers agents talk to typically want to work with podcasts that have at least 50K downloads per month.
8. 60% of podcast listeners prefer video.
9. Celebrity doesn’t matter in podcasting as much as transparency and connectivity and authenticity.
10. People listen to podcasts to hear about topics that aren’t covered on other mediums.
